Neil Fraser (Scottish Association for Marine Science, UK). Talk on Monday, 14:50

Neil Fraser is a Lecturer in Physical Oceanography. His research focuses on observing and understanding the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), its underlying dynamics, and its role in climate variability and change. He is heavily involved in sustained observations of the subpolar North Atlantic, contributing to major international and national observing programmes (e.g. OSNAP). His work combines observational and analytical approaches to study large-scale circulation and boundary current dynamics. A key aspect of his research is the development and deployment of novel ocean observing systems, integrating moored and autonomous platforms. Through these efforts, he aims to enhance future ocean observing capabilities and address emerging challenges in long-term, sustainable monitoring of the ocean climate system.

TUESDAY : René Schubert (GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany). Talk on Tuesday, 14:50

René Schubert is an ocean dynamicist with a focus on ocean scale interactions from numerical models, theory, and observations. His work primarily concentrated on 1) the near-surface kinetic energy cascade of submesoscale, mesoscale, and large scale flows from satellite measurements and numerical models and 2) on the effects of large scale instabilities and resulting interior eddies on the abyssal circulation and the formation of benthic storms from moored data and ocean models. After a doctorate and a first postdoc at GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany), he did a second postdoc at LOPS (Brest, France) with extensive collaborations with scientists from UCLA (LA, USA). Subsequently, he moved back to GEOMAR for a third postdoc in the ERC synergy project WHIRLS, where he investigates submesoscale ocean dynamics and associated air-sea interactions.

Jiarong Wu obtained her bachelor’s degree in engineering from Tsinghua University in 2014. She then pursued her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with Prof. Luc Deike at Princeton University on ocean surface wave dynamics using high-fidelity numerical simulations. Since September 2023, she has worked as a postdoctoral research associate, supervised by Prof. Laure Zanna at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Her postdoctoral work centers around parameterization of air-sea interaction in weather and climate models, as part of the multi-institutional project LEAP.
